I came to KPop Demon Hunters a little late and I assumed numorous things about it which turned out to be... well some not quite true and others not really true at all. Yes it's rather predictable and formulaic. It feels a bit of-the-moment trendy attempting to capitalize on music and art trends that are make it feel very right-now. I was wrong about it being American pastiche of Korean pop culture as it is more about Korean diaspora culture. But once again, after I saw it I realized it was legitimately so much fun. Like actual K Pop KPop Demon Hunters has a catchy hook that is hard not to get seduced by. Its also lovingly earnest in its love letter to Asian pop tropes. So while it might have the depth of a wading pool KPop Demon Hunters is too much sweet fun to dump on.
This feels like the sort of thing that could grow into more. Further movies could explore more of the lore and characters' backgrounds. The film has become so much of a phenom hopefully it has the runway to take this world its built to new heights. For now it feels somewhat slim and limited but there is a great deal of potential in world building here. With the success this film is having no doubt we'll get more. I just hope they don't cheep out on the sequels and really build this into something that isn't just a flash in the pan.
